How To Use Pepper Spray

By: Gary Nelson

What is pepper spray?

Pepper spray is made from oleoresin capsicum (crushed red pepper). It causes a severe burning sensation in the eyes with coughing, tears, difficulty breathing and sometimes vomiting. The eyes close involuntarily, the nose runs and moist skin stings.

The best self defense is to be prepared.

You must remain alert and aware of your surroundings. In order for pepper spray to be effective, it has to be in your hand ready to use. It is not going to do you any good stuck in the bottom of your purse or deep in your pocket. The assailant will not wait for you to dig out your pepper spray. When you are approaching your car, walking through a parking garage, or walking to the door of your house or apartment, you should have the canister in your hand ready to use.

Pepper spray comes out in a stream that will reach six to eight feet.

To use the spray, move the red tab to the ready position. Stand at an angle to the attacker in a sort of relaxed running stance for a fast get away. Hold the pepper spray canister in your dominate hand. If you are right handed, use your right hand. Use your left hand to give the signal to stop and shout “STOP!” Your left hand serves as a shield when spraying into the wind.

If the attacker proceeds to enter your private space--the eight feet that the spray will reach--without stopping, SPRAY him. Do not extend your spray hand out in front of your body. Keep your elbow slightly bent so the attacker can not reach out and knock the spray away or grab you. Spray in a zigzag pattern, either a “z” or “w,” hitting the three most important face zones--eyes, nose and mouth.

Contacts and glasses may deflect some of the spray, but spraying the mouth and nose will be effective in halting the attack. If you are trained in martial arts, you may want to follow with a face punch or pelvic kick. If you are not trained in martial arts, the next step is to RUN after you spray.

Let the police worry about treatment for the attacker.

One final word of caution. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT take pity or feel sorry for your attacker. Do not try to comfort or treat him. Escape immediately and call the police!

Read the instructions that come with your pepper spray to become familiar with how it works.
