Patrick Henry said "give me liberty or give me death", a tenet we are taught in school that is misleading and farcical. These are great words to incite a nation to revolution but are impracticable when one chooses to preserve the safety of our greater society. Liberty itself is an illusion that cannot bear scrutiny. We are not free to incite riots, entice others to commit crimes, or abet terrorist acts. Our elected legislatures enact laws to ensure the equality and safety of all but we surely cannot expect the law itself to insure our security. The law is but a tool our enforcers use, as is the Patriot Act, a tool which must be used properly. A tool we must use to secure our greater society. The Fourth Amendment to our Constitution cannot insure the security of private conversations over public lines of communication. All we can expect from the fourth amendment is that the government cannot use the information against us in a court of law without due process. Phone lines, air waves, the internet or any mode of transmission in themselves cannot be secured in any way that others will not be able to gain access. Every phone in America can be "tapped" by numerous law enforcement agencies, any number of phone company employees or others who can gain access through many unsecured entry points. Radio and even satellite transmissions can and have been intercepted and listened to. Super computers and internet service providers and their employees monitor electronic bits of data traveling over the internet. Anyone who believes they have an absolute right to privacy probably also believes that locks keep them and their possessions safe, but they are only fooling themselves. I suggest that indeed only few citizens proportionally among our population would even consider choosing death over the loss of their perceived liberties. Many detractors gripe and complain about the inequities of life in our society and their disenchantments. Yet how many of these even care enough to exercise their disapproval by voting? I am convinced that most people choose to obey laws, work, pay their bills, raise families and simply want to enjoy their normal lives. Some people seem to want the government to provide them with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness but insist they each should oversee the definitions even to the detriment to their fellow man. I think we each should seek and provide these things, as I shall always think Patrick Henry did, for ourselves. Our noble law enforcers can only help insure the safety of our lives with the tools they have. The liberty we seek can only be ensured if our lives are safe. The happiness we pursue must be moderated by the mores of the whole and for the protection of the least among us.
